A 22-YEAR-OLD woman was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a car collided with a tree on the A590 yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

The eastbound carriageway was blocked between Brettargh Holt and Junction 36 of the M6 from the time of the accident, 2.45pm, until 8pm while police investigated the scene.

The woman, from Barrow, is being treated in Preston Royal Infirmary with 'serious leg injuries'. She was a front passenger in the black BMW M3 convertible which was being driven by a 41-year-old man.

The man was treated, along with a seven-year-old girl who was in the back of the car, for minor injuries at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and have since been discharged. Both the man and the girl were also from Barrow.

Two air ambulances attended the accident and a road policing team and collision investigation unit are currently at the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the incident or seen the BMW M3 shortly before the collision to contact PC Terry Graham on 101.
