SUNSCREEN and hats were at the ready at Lunesdale Show as visitors revelled in the ‘hottest temperatures’ the event has experienced in recent years.

Crowds cooled down with ice creams and sheltered in sought after spots of shades as bright sunshine pushed figures well above 20°C.

Rumours that this would be the last the show hosted at Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club were squashed by the event’s secretary Jill Gibbs. She said although organisers had looked at alternative sites none had been decided on.

Entries in most categories were up again and this year there was a steep increase in agricultural trade stands.

“It’s always good for a local show to have lots of agricultural stands so we are very grateful to them for coming,” said Mrs Gibbs. “This is one of the hottest years I can remember. “Things have gone remarkably well. We may not be the biggest show but I often get told people think we are one of the friendliest. “It is a real family event – this year we had three generations from one family stewarding.”

Taking home the top cattle prize was a black Holstein called New Croft Shotgun, in owners’ David and John Airey, of West Hall, in Whittington, first attempt at showing the two-year-old.

“I’m pleased to win the supreme cow,” said David Airey. “This is the first time we have won here in years.”

He added the judges said they were impressed with Shotgun’s udder and decided it was a ‘stylish’ beast.

Securing the prestigious title of supreme sheep was a mule shearling owned by Richard Batty, Red Hills, Skelsmergh.

“I’m surprised and very chuffed to have won,” said Mr Batty. “The judges said it showed quality throughout.”

Mr Batty also presented a Suffolk sheep which won reserve champion.

Winning first place in the heavy horse section was Wheathead Akelda, a three shire filly. Owner Glenys Dodd, of Park Farm, in Daltonin-Furness, said: “I was very pleased to win,” the horse breeder said. “It’s a nice show and I always have a good craic with the competitors.”

Show presidents for 2012 were Anne and Peter Burrow of Cowan Bridge. Mrs Burrow has been going to the show since she was a child. The couple volunteer work for the North West Air Ambulance – the event’s charity.

“It was an honour to be asked,” said Mrs Burrow, who entered the photography and hand craft classes. “I always enjoy watching the sheep classes but there is so much to do here it’s great.”
