YOUNGSTERS learned about safety on railway lines as part of a five-months long scheme designed to educate them about the important role police play in the community.
Launched by Cumbria Police earlier this year, the Junior PSCO scheme is made up of 20 children from Flookburgh, Grange and Cartmel primary schools, who will attend a wide-range of events organised by police and partner agencies.
The first of these events saw them meet at Grange-over-Sands railway station.
They were taken to Bailey Lane level crossing by level crossing managers Simon Shipperd and Jon Hume, who talked to them about the speed, weight and stopping distances of trains and the importance of using level crossings correctly.
They then caught a train to Carnforth and met British Transport Police Officer Gavin Daws.
PC Daws talked to the children about his role and the types of crime that occurred on the railway, including trespass.
