THE 131st Cartmel show held yesterday (Wednesday) has been hailed for its 'atmosphere, heart and soul' and 'one of the best yet' by this year's President Lucy Cavendish.

A crowd of around 6,000 gathered at Cartmel racecourse for the annual event.

Miss Cavendish said: "With the challenges faced by the countryside it is more important than ever that shows like this continue to prosper."

It was a day of two halves as torrential rain soaked the fields in the morning – followed by a sun-soaked afternoon.

MORE TOP STORIES:

Show Secretary Sarah Dickinson said the day had gone ‘brilliantly’ with a fabulous 196 entries in the new walking sticks category.

Entries were also up for beef cattle, similar to last year's for sheep but slightly down for horses.

Mrs Dickinson said the horticulture tent was brimming.

Tributes were paid to Maurice Chapman, who was due to serve as this year's chairman but died in June. Acting chairman Robert Knipe presented a trophy in his memory to the Best Pedigree Beef Exhibit.

One entrant who went away happy was Claire Simpson, of Hale, whose horse Criffos Merlyn was victorious in the Private Driving category.

Mrs Simpson also picked up first place in the Ridden Fell category with her horse Farleton Fan – also the winner of the Champion Fell class.

The overall sheep champion was James Robinson's Texel.

Caroline Airey, who travelled from Ulverston to see her Suffolk shearling tup win best male sheep, said: "The standard has been amazing this year."

Robert Rawlinson from Quarry Bank Farm, near Ulverston, won the Champion Beef non-limousin with 'Quarry Bank Icarus', a 16 month old British and he was ‘very proud’.

Calder Vale resident Kevin Hebblethwaite was celebrating after one of his birds picked up best in show in the poultry section for a second year.

The champ was a seven-month-old Black German Langshank.

On its success Mr Hebblethwaite said: "It's a good one of its type and it has a lovely green sheen."

Meanwhile, in the bustling village industries tent, a beautiful, bright blue patchwork quilt was attracting admiring crowds as the winner of the best overall exhibit.

Mrs S. Stilling from Grange-over-sands was the quilter behind the prize-winning entry and used a variety of techniques in its construction, including traditional English techniques such as English Paper Piecing and a Red Indian technique, Seminoles.

The day also saw Cartmel YFC present a cheque for £3,375 to St. Mary's Hospice and a further £3,375 to Great North Air Ambulance raised from their charity auction and calendar.
