To mark the 200th anniversary of The Westmorland Gazette in 2018, we are publishing a photograph from our archives on our website every day this year.

Today's photograph shows the aftermath of a crash involving a Glasgow furniture van at the bend at the bridge over Rydal Beck in 1940.

The vehicle crashed through the side of the bridge, leapt the beck and somersaulted on to the opposite bank.

The driver, Mr J. Leggat Bothwell, was only shaken and bruised.
