POLICE are asking people who carry knives to surrender them to the nearest police station.

As part of Operation Sceptre, a national week-long knife surrender, officers are asking people to wrap unwanted knives in newspaper and place them in secure knife bins outside police stations across East Lancashire.

A police spokesman said: "We're determined to do everything we can to tackle knife crime in Lancashire.

"Knives cost lives and even one knife surrendered which could fall into the wrong hands will make Lancashire safer.

"As part of this week and in the longer term we'll also be pro-actively targeting wanted offenders, working with schools and partners to educate young people and using stop and search powers in known hot spots to keep people safe, especially the young and the vulnerable."

Bins are at police stations including Blackburn's Greenbank Police station,Chorley Police Station and Burnley Police Station.
