With less traffic on the roads we got used to seeing people speeding through neighbourhoods without a care for others whatsoever.

Now, there is a huge fallacy about speeding motorists. We tend to think they are the younger more inexperienced drivers who want to show off. They have got themselves a new car and can’t handle the power or responsibility so decide to put their foot down at almost every opportunity.

The truth is they are mix of people and the ones I have come across tend to be in their late thirties and forties.

They are guys (mostly are men) who are reliving their youth and find themselves driving some high-powered car complete with a receding hairline and slightly podgy look about them. The point is, one cannot really afford a nice car until one gets older and it is only then you realise that the Miami Vice days have passed you by. Two things then happen. You get frustrated you didn’t have this motor when it mattered and secondly, you look better in the car than you do without it.

And while I might get some grief for this - the VW Golf drivers tend to be the worst of the lot.

There is nothing worst than seeing a VW Golf driver bearing down on you in your rear view mirror and then pulling up alongside you. The window opens and waft of weed blows across in your direction.

The driver then puts his foot down and races ahead only for us to embarrassingly meet again at the next traffic lights. This, I have to say is like being at a urinal. We want to look over for a second time but it just seems a bit weird now.

I also tend to find a lot of the people who tend to drive at these high speeds have nowhere to go. I once saw a guy drive past me at a reckless speed and when we met up at the KFC I asked him bluntly why he was so desperate to get to his chicken wings? He seemed clearly embarrassed.

As I edge towards 50 and old age, I have also become almost obsessed with driving at 27 miles per hour when I have an impatient driver right up close behind me. This can be so annoying for this type of driver but extremely satisfying for me.

I blame the new road structure in and around Blackburn myself. I know some people will disagree but we don’t want nice roads. We want silly roads which make no sense (like the one outside the railway station) and speed bumps that cause you to slow down to a crawl.

Next week, traffic will return to normal levels. Not a moment too soon I say.
