BLACKBURN with Darwen has recorded the third highest weekly rise in coronavirus cases in England.

The figures, collected by Public Health England, shows that the borough's infection rate has gone up from 53.4 in the seven days leading to May 1 to 99.5 in the week leading to May 8, with 149 new cases.

This marks the equivalent of 99.5 cases per 100,000 people.

The Ribble Valley has also recorded an increase in cases, going up from an infection rate of 11.5 to 21.4 with seven new cases in the same period.

However, East Lancashire's other borough's have all recorded a decrease in infections, with the fall being particularly sharp in Hyndburn, which has gone from an infection rate of 132 to 37.
