SHIRESHEAD and Warton go head-to-head at Borwick Lane on Saturday knowing whoever emerges victorious will likely be crowned champions of Division One of the Westmorland Cricket League.

Both sides picked up maximum points over the Bank Holiday weekend and with just nine points between the pair and two games remaining the pressure is on at the home of Warton this weekend.

Warton (137-8) picked up 12 points in Saturday's clash with Ambleside (136-9) before disposing of Milnthorpe on Monday in a 79 run win.

But Shireshead appear to be in no mood to relinquish their loose grip on the title.

They followed up Saturday's comprehensive win over Windermere with a 91 run win at Sedgwick on Monday.

Windermere invited Shireshead to bat first upon winning the toss, and Shireshead’s opening pair of Tom Jacques (24) and Paul Yates started well as they added 24 from the first six overs.

There was enough movement in the wicket to keep the bowlers interested however, and Matt Park (3 for 60) and Nick Lewthwaite (5 for 70) kept picking up wickets although the scoring rate never slowed much below four an over.

Phil Bovis, Peter Wilson, Simon Gould and Phil Oliver all made starts without going on to make a score, and Shireshead were indebted to James Rafferty (25 not out) and Jack Dodd (21) for rescuing them somewhat.

The pair added 40 in a patient stand, punctuated with the odd boundary, which allowed a score of 149 to be posted.

The Windermere reply began badly as Park was run out by Dodd with just six runs on the board, but Oliver Killiner and Lewthwaite steadied the ship as they took the score to 25 for 1.

Dave Jack (5 for 16) and James Rafferty had settled into a nice rhythm by now, and as they dried up the run-scoring the wickets began to come.

The bowlers were aided by several sharp catches taken in the field, and when Jack took two wickets in an over it began a collapse that was terminal. Peter Wilson (3 for 6) helped Jack to finish the job as Windermere were bowled out for 50.

Elsewhere on Saturday Sedgwick beat Milnthorpe, Silverdale beat Bare, Arnside beat Burneside and Westgate beat Heysham.

On Monday, Heysham put bottom club Bare to the sword, Arnside overcame Westgate, Silverdale saw off Burneside and Windermere beat local rivals Ambleside.
