LAURA Massaro's run in the US Open has ended after she fell to a straight games defeat to world champion Raneem El Welily at Philadelphia’s Drexel University.

Hoghton's Massaro was appearing in her ninth successive U.S. Open quarter-final and had earned her spot in the last eight after a 3-2 win over Malaysia’s eight-time World Champion Nicol David in the previous round.

But the 34-year-old was powerless to resist El Welily as the world number two played a scintillating brand of squash to nullify Massaro’s talents and the Egyptian player rose to an 11-7, 11-2, 12-10 victory in 32 minutes to send Massaro out.

“Laura is never easy to play against,” said El Welily afterwards.

“It was 3-0 but as you can see from the scoreline it was close, especially in the third. Laura was really getting me all around the court.

“Maybe I played safe a little bit, maybe I wanted to win too much so that put a bit of pressure on me, but overall I’m very happy to come out as a winner today and it was a good match.

Massaro’s next tournament will see her line up at the Everbright Sun Hung Kai Hong Kong Squash Open, PSA World Tour Platinum tournament, which takes place between November 19 and 25.
