PENRITH Reserves have moved up to second place and within seven points of leaders Keswick in the James Cropper Westmorland League Division One after an impressive 3-1 win at Ibis.

The win came despite going behind to a spectacular Tyler James goal in the opening when the Ibis striker connected with a speculative overhead volley that flew into the net.

The lead lasted only a matter of minutes before Rhys Graham levelled from close range and from that point on the visitors gained control and Luke Whalley’s goal saw them 2-1 up at half time.

Penrith controlled the second half and created a lot of chances but Ryan Smith's close range strike was their only reward.

In other games, Appleby beat Sedbergh Wanderers 2-0, Windermere edged out Endmoor KGR 2-1 and Liam Robinson's brace saw Castletown United to a hard fought 2-0 victory over Shap.

Keswick were in Cumberland Cup action and defeated Eden Thistle 3-0 at Fitz Park, while in the other cup game Wigton Harriers won 4-1 at Langwathby.

Kendal County Reserves progressed to the next round of the Westmorland Junior Cup with a 3-0 win at Burton Thistle, where Jacob Matthews, Jacob Carway and Callum Moffat scored the goals.

In other cup games, Cartmel Reserves won 5-2 at Ambleside United, Keswick Reserves won 7-2 at Greystoke , Kirkby Stephen beat Kirkby Lonsdale 3-0 and Jay Hayton's hat trick saw Burneside hit back from 2-0 down to see off Milnthorpe Corinthian Reserves 3-2.

Three games were played in Division Three, where Kirkoswald Reserves defeated Endmoor KGR Reserves 2-0 ,Penrith Academy edged out Sedbergh Reserves 2-1 and Staveley Reserves won 5-1 at Penrith Saints.

Appleby and Kendal County will meet in the quarter finals of the Westmorland Senior Cup in a repeat of last season’s final.

The tie which will be played on Saturday, February 9 alongside the thre other cup games where Kirkoswald will entertain West Lancashire League Division One team Milnthorpe Corinthians, Kendal United host Windermere and Keswick play Wetheriggs United.

In the Benevolent Trophy, Kendal United will host Wetheriggs, Keswick play Dent, Ibis meet Endmoor and Kirkoswald entertain Burneside – with the games scheduled to be played on Saturday, January 26.
