DESPITE the torrid conditions this weekend, Kendal Men’s 1s welcomed local rivals Kirkby Lonsdale Men’s 1s to their Queen Katherine School fortress.

The Kirkby Lonsdale defence was well organised in the first half of the game and comfortably kept a clean sheet. While the Greens had their chances it was the visitors who took the lead when they broke well to sneak a 1-0 advantage from a counter-attack.

At half time it was Kendal 0-1 Kirkby Lonsdale.

Early in the second half Kendal went on the attack. Dan Cook connected with his strike beautifully and sent the ball crashing into the net to make it one all.

Upon the restart Kendal retained control of the game.

A controversial change of decision that was initially given as a hit out for the visitors was reversed for a short corner to the hosts. A clean injection and stop allowed Aaron Screen to step up, connect and drag-flick with aplomb. The ball smashed against the back board to make it 2-1 to Kendal.

Andrew Melville claimed the accolade of man of the match through his never-ceasing high energy and commitment to the Kendal cause.

In the dying embers of the game Alex Watkins received the ball in the visitors' D. He controlled and set himself up with his first touch and with his second he performed a world-class finish over the keeper for the game's sealing goal.
