A NEW women’s softball team has been formed at Netherfield Cricket Club and they made the short trip to Carnforth for their first ever Softball League Day.

The format of the day was a round robin against Arnside Maidens, Carnforth Ladies and Burneside.

Netherfield got off to a great start after they defeated Arnside in what proved to be a very close and competitive game.

It went right down to the wire but they held their nerve after Arnside required 6 to draw off the last ball with tight bowling from Louise Foster ensuring Netherfield won the game.

Earlier in the game, there were notable batting performances from Lisa Metcalf and Lynsey Goodyear who both scored a number of boundaries.

And Grace Airey also made a big impression as she opened the bowling and cleaned up the Arnside batters in the first over with superb accuracy.

In the second game, Netherfield lost by 8 runs to Burneside.

But their defeat was not without a fight and Emma Foster and Zoe Dempsey batted well throughout their innings, scoring a host of boundaries.

The final game saw Netherfield take on Carnforth and they were eagerly looking forward to the game which began in blazing sunshine and under blue skies.

Carnforth were on form having won both their previous games.

And they continued that good form into their clash against Netherfield who were soon up against it.

The Netherfield ladies made a bad start after losing early wickets, but they recovered thanks to the mother and daughter partnership of Grace and Caroline Airey who produced a magnificent partnership with Grace taking the lead.

However in reply Carnforth had some very strong batting and managed to win the game to conclude an afternoon which was played in high spirits.

And despite that late defeat, it was still a successful and enjoyable afternoon for the fledgling Netherfield side.

The next Softball event they will take part in is on Friday, July 5 when Netherfield travel to play at Arnside.
