CHAMPIONS Netherfield A remain second in the South Westmorland Senior Bowling League Division One table after they defeated Holme A 7-1 on Monday afternoon.

Roger Townsend and Roy Crompton got them off to a good start, picking up respective 21-11 victories over Mike Fell and Caroline Schofield.

Tony Dixon held his nerve to defeat Ian Hayton 21-20, while John Sarsfield picked up the best result after defeating Alice Thomas 21-7.

In the doubles, Peter Shepherd and Joyce Barker edged out Peter Sudworth and Dave Mc Roy 21-20, and Holme's only win came from Steve Ashburn and Tom Baxter who saw off Sue Hogarth and Mal Barker 21-10.

Victoria stay six points clear at the top after defeating Springfield A 7-1, while Lindale A and Subscription A both picked up respective 5-3 victories against Warton A and Silverdale A.

Burneside A won 6-2 at Windermere A while Levens A defeated Netherfield B 7-1, though the scoreline does not reflect a match where three out of the six games were won by one point.

In Division Two, Lower Holker A and Abbot Hall A picked up respective 6-2 wins at Crosthwaite A and Ingleborough A, Kirkby Lonsdale A defeated Warton B 7-1, Bolton Le Sands A edged Arnside A 5-3 before Carnforth A defeated Heversham A 7-1.

Lower Holker B, Lindale B, Burton in Lonsdale and Milnthorpe A all picked up respective 6-2 victories in Division Three over Hawkshead, Abbot Hall B, Carnforth B and Endmoor A.

In the other games, Sedbergh B won 5-3 at Burneside B and Bowness A defeated Levens B 7-1.

Division Four remained competitive after Kirkby Lonsdale B, Victoria B and Ingleborough B all claimed 6-2 wins against Subscription B, Holme B and Allithwaite B respectively while Windermere B edged out Springfield B 5-3.

In Division Five, Silverdale B, Bolton Le Sands B, Milnthorpe B, Sedbergh A and Arnside B all picked up important wins.

The British Crown Green Bowls Association's junior merit is to be staged at Netherfield Bowling Club on Saturday, August 17.

The action starts at 10am at the Parkside Road venue, admission is free with programmes priced £1, and there will be a barbecue and refreshments all day.
