A MAGNIFICENT effort by a quartet of Kendal Judo Club players saw them shine at this week's Commonwealth Judo Championships.

Under the watchful eye of their coach Nick Hill, Phil Rogan started the ball rolling in the event at Walsall, West Midlands, as he competed in the Masters Under 66 kilo category.

His quarter final against Dayanand Dhadve of India ended with a great throw for the full point, and he then dominated his semi final to book a final slot against fellow Englishman Anthony Ashton.

It was a close contest, but Ashton scored with a late half point throw to clinch the title and leave Rogan with a well deserved silver medal.

Danny Harper was next on the mat in the Masters Over 100 kilo weight group and after a series of very close contests which he won with half point scores, he struck gold with the winning score coming just as the final bell sounded.

Lauren Fox (U48k) and Nye Greasley (U73k) had unlucky draws in their weights, going down to eventual medallists, but both gave a good account of themselves against very strong and more experienced opposition to earn creditable seventh places.
