A DAZZLING performance by Indya Sharp of the Ulverston club was one of the highlights of Kendal Amateur Swmming Club's annual Mint Gala which was held at the weekend.

The 15-year-old got off to a flying start with her first gold medal in the 50 backstroke where she outpaced club mate Evie McMullen to win by a clear three seconds.

Concentrating her efforts on the sprints, she then took on the 50 freestyle and found herself in a real battle with Barrow’s Lois Postlethwaite.

They matched each other stroke for stroke throughout the race and in a blanket finish involving five swimmers Sharp got the edge and the win.

The 100 individual medley gave her scope to use her all round talents and she took full advantage and cruised to victory by a clear four second margin.

However, the 50 breaststroke was a different story and she had to call on all her power and skill to hold off the challenge of Carnforth’s Hannah Edwards.

Her 50 butterfly brought her up against Postlethwaite again and another classic developed with Sharp again proving victorious before she completed an outstanding display with a silver in the 100 butterfly.

Reuben Eley produced a brilliant finish in the 100 freestyle to win in the closest of finishes, and the nine-year-old then swept to victory in the 100 backstroke.

The 50 freestyle sprint saw another close finish but he took the win by a split second in 38.66, then completed a great performance with three silvers from 50 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 100 individual medley.

Another nine-year-old, Abigail Caine, was also on great form, walking way with the gold in the 100 backstroke followed by a solid performance in the 50 backstroke and going on to add a silver and a bronze to her medal collection.

Penelope Boyle showed superb technique to take a well earned gold in the 50 breaststroke, but it was her stunning win in the 100 butterfly which really caught the eye before she rounded off her day with silvers in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Brodie Scales also had an outstanding day, the 14-year-old picking up seven medals.

He outclassed the field to take gold in the 50 and 100 backstroke, then snapped up three silver medals for 50 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 100 individual medley and also picked up a pair of bronze medals.

Grace Weaver took gold in a tremendous 50 breaststroke race, while Phillip Crayston also produced an outstanding swim to take the gold in the 100 breaststroke.

And minor place medals for Olivia Sturgeon, Marley Griffiths, Nathan Caine, Annabel Crayston, Maisie Allonby, Adam Jones, and Evie McMullen made it a highly satisfactory day for the Otters squad.
