THE muddy conditions long associated with Whitestone were in evidence once more when the course hosted the latest round of the Kendal Winter League fell running series this week.
But the difficult surface at the Staveley-in-Cartmel venue did not hinder Calder Valley man Charlie Ing and Rossendale Harriers' man Marcus Preedy who edged ahead of the field.
And in a thrilling finish, Ing pipped his rival by a single second as he clocked a time of 31 minutes and seven seconds.
Ambleside's Jon Rylance was third and first MV40 home in a superb time of 31 minutes and 19 seconds.
And Jon's daughter Chloe was first lady back in 35 minutes, 51 seconds which earned her 32nd place overall, one minute, 20 seconds ahead of Bianca Dyer of Helm Hill.
Dyer's Helm Hill colleague Rob Jebb was victorious in the club's own uphill only race at Sedbergh last week.
