PHIL Conlin capped a player of the match performance for Kendal Mint Cakes with four goals in a convincing 7-2 victory over Bolton University.

In a rearranged fixture for the mixed teams in the England Hockey Championship, it was the Cumbrians who flexed their muscles to clinch the glory.

The scoring was opened by Vicky Whalley-Jones as she was picked out by Conlin to smash home past the visiting goalkeeper.

Conlin then got in on the act and the faintest touches wrong footed the goalkeeper for 2-0, before a half volley made it three.

It was 4-0 before half time as Nick Davis pounced after the goalkeeper had pulled off a good save.

The Mint Cakes remained on top after the restart and Conlin completed his hat-trick to deflect Aaron Screen’s pass into the back of the net.

A stunning strike from Bolton reduced arrears but Conlin reopened the five-goal cushion as he spun and squeezed the ball past the goalkeeper.

The scoring for the hosts was completed by Whalley-Jones with a thunderbolt strike, with Bolton getting a consolation late on.
