MILNTHORPE’S Cricket Club is continuing to raise the funds required to pay its current expenses during the ongoing Covid crisis.

This comes at the same time as the Westmorland Cricket League Division One side is being greatly supported by the local community in the weekly Football cards. This has continued to provide much needed income for the club.

However, while the weekly fund raisers continue to help, the club have also received a special grant to assist with the club’s preparation for the next season.

The grant went towards the upkeep of the pitch which still required high maintenance during the Covid lockdown.

Milnthorpe Cricket Club chairman Kevin James expressed his and the club’s optimism for the current season to get underway.

Kevin said: “As a club we are still hopeful of some cricket this season, and we feel it is vitally important for many clubs that there is some play.

"However, if we don’t, I do wonder whether there will be the same enthusiasm for the game next season especially after such a long layoff.

"From a financial viewpoint, the bills continue to come in, and despite the grant which we really appreciated, it was felt that everyone at the club wanted to get out there and raise some more money and we are really grateful for all the support during what are challenging times.”

Milnthorpe Cricket Club is still hoping to build on its largely positive 2019 season.

During the last season, the second team gained a promotion while the Junior teams.

The team were going from strength to strength as they continued to pick up some good results.

The First Team were aiming for a more consistent season, and have always been a tough team to beat.

However, the camaraderie off and on the field between the players was one of promise with the whole squad looking forward to playing on hard fast tracks following on from the recent good weather.

Due to the Covid lockdown, the club has been through some testing times but thanks the community and its players who have offered their constant support.
