THE SIX-pointers keep coming for Kendal Town, who face the club immed-iately above them in the league table when Ilkeston Town visit the Lakeland Radio Stadium this Saturday (3pm kick-off).

A rearranged midweek match brings a trip to tenth-placed Matlock Town on Tuesday evening.

Town's upturn in form had a setback last weekend when they came away empty- handed from bottom-placed Lincoln United after a 2-0 defeat.

Lee Ashcroft's side had taken seven points from a possible nine, but hopes of a third win to follow those over Prescot and North Ferriby failed to materialise after several good chances went begging.

Ashcroft did not start against Lincoln because of a hamstring twinge he had felt against Prescot, but he came off the bench for the last 20 minutes on Saturday and reported no ill-effects.

Who plays up front is still to be decided with Ashcroft having "rested" Paul Fildes after a ten-match run in the side last weekend.

Gareth Arnison returned to the starting line-up but with Town failing to get on the scoresheet, the jury remains out on the favoured combin-ation and Ashcroft would not reveal who will get the vote.

Midfielder Callum Warburton made a satisfactory comeback, filling in at full back at Lincoln for the unavailable Dave Standley and comes back into the reckoning for selection.

Ashcroft said he was still looking to make long-term signings and this week was hoping to seal a deal for full back, who would be "one of the best defenders in the Unibond League".

Lincoln United ..........2 Kendal Town.........0.

KENDAL Town missed out on a realistic opportunity to haul themselves further clear of the drop zone as they lost 2-0 at lowly Lincoln United at the weekend.

Suprisingly, boss Lee Ashcroft shuffled his side on the back of the crucial 3-1 midweek success against Prescot Cables and there was no room for striker Paul Fildes, who was rested while Ashcroft himself dropped down to the substitutes' bench.

Initially, Town adopted a 4-3-3 formation without any kind of joy and Ashcroft quickly addressed that tactic by reverting to the customary 4-4-2 style of play, In a first period of few goal-scoring chances, the teams looked destined to turn around goalless. However, the hosts, whose last home success was on the opening day of the season, took the lead in first half added time.

Midfielder Ian Kilford conceded a needless free kick on the edge of the Kendal penalty area and Lincoln defender Ashley Foyle rose unchallenged to head past a rooted David Newnes in the Kendal goal.

Ashcroft made a half-time change with the free-from-suspension Craig Hobson replacing an ineffective Lee Mulvaney and the early signs were promising when Paul Byrne came close to a leveller with a well-struck free kick that struck the inside of the post and squirmed to safety.

Town were back on the attack again quickly and the ball somehow eluded Gareth Arnison as a close-range goal-scoring opportunity went begging.

Ashcroft then introduced himself to the play but was unable to inspire a Kendal reply and late on the bottom-placed side broke away to score through substitute Danny Brookes to secure themselves an important victory.

HOW THEY RATED: Newnes 7, Henry 6, Warburton 8, Hallam 7, Melling 7, Cole 6, Osman 5 (Leigh 77min, 6), Kilford 6, Mulvaney 5 (Hobson 46min, 7), Arnison 5 (Ashcroft 58 min, 6), Byrne 7. Att: 108.

O Star man - Callum Warburton - a determined display on his return.
