ALL-CONQUERING Ambleside United have been crowned champions of Division Two after thumping Furness Cavaliers 6-2 on Tuesday night.

They are aiming to cap off a memorable season by winning the Treble on Thursday night when they take on Ladybridge in the Challenge Cup Final.

But after losing their first game of the season on Saturday, going down to a 3-2 reverse at home to Todmorden, the blip in their form continued at the beginning of the night when they conceded first, Joe Murphy scoring.

But the newly-crowned champions soon turned that around, Martin Grundy belting a 25-yarder into the back of the net. They mounted the pressure and Ambleside took the lead through Mike Rushton, and a Rob Wilson penalty after Zach Clark was fouled put them 3-1 up at the break.

On the hour mark, Clark made it 4-1 and Craig Edmondson got Ambleside’s fifth after the Cavaliers failed to clear a cross. Jamie Parkinson got the league leaders sixth goal before a Matt Hargreaves header provided consolation for the Barrow side.

Goalscorers on Saturday for Ambleside’s 3-2 defeat were Mike Barron and Clark.

It was a mixed week for Kendal County. They found themselves 1-0 down at half time in blustery conditions against Ladybridge, but the second half was a different story. Joe Baker bagged a remarkable five goals in the second half to completely turn the game around, firstly scoring a penalty, then slotting home two lovely finishes to claim his hat-trick. Baker missed a penalty after he was fouled in the box but he fired home the rebound to make it 4-1 and he got his final goal with a chip on the keeper to cap a memorable personal day.

But Tuesday night saw them succumb to a 1-0 defeat against GSK Ulverston Rangers, who claimed a crucial three points to lift them up two places in the table to ninth, Jack Gardner getting the only goal of the night. County are now guaranteed to finish third in the table regardless of what happens in their tie against Todmorden on Saturday.

A hat-trick from Adam Gardner was enough for Milnthorpe Corinthians to see off Furness Cavaliers as they won 3-1 to solidify their eighth place in the table.
