IT WAS perfect conditions for the Cumbria county Cross Country Championships at Fitz Park, Keswick and Kendal AAC athletes gained medals across the age groups.

Nine-year-old Frazor Sproul battled throughout with the eventual winner of the U11s Samual Almond of Eden Runners. With the times equal, Sproul was edged into silver medal position on the line.

The U11 girls race was just as exiting with yet another sprint for the line. This time it was Malissa Sproul who joined her brother in picking up silver, while Steph Driscoll just missed out on bronze by one second.

The U13 boys ran superbly as Ben Granger clocked second in 9.44. Cole Blaikie was 12 seconds adrift in third and Alex Birkett finished fourth just one second behind Blaikie, but Birkett was rewarded for his hard work with a runaway team victory.

At the bottom of her age group U13 Samantha Bland's race was a physical one and the jostling began well before the finish line.

But determined Bland stuck in for a well-earned third just four seconds off of silver.

Imogen Burrow, who has found some really good form recently, won the gold by five seconds.

The Sproul family continued their success with Robbie’s 8th position in the U15 boys, while Helm Hill’s Chris Richards had to be satisfied with silver after misjudging the finish.

It was team medal for the U15 girls lead by Heidi Murry in third, two seconds behind Connie Hurton of Eden Runners, with Sarah Thompson taking fifth and Erin Procter 13th after returning from injury.

It was a strong race for the U17 boys race and Mark Sullivan's sixth position was well-earned.

The U20 men covered the same distance as the senior men - a tough call for 17 year old Tom Hartley. He ran a well-judged race to finish third.

The Sproul family medal haul was complete when Eilidh easily won the U20 ladies in her first race running with the senior ladies. Lauren Munro-Bennett of Helm Hill ran well to finish second.

It was a tough day for Danny Parkinson, who finished third. James Douglas stole the glory with Ricky Lightfoot from Ellenborough in second.

Dianne Priestley won the womens event.
