KENDAL Cricket Club lost by 29 runs to defending Northern Premier Cricket League Champions Leyland at Shap Road.

The Auld Greys restricted Leyland to 150-8 as Jason Dawes, Saeed Bariwala and Toby Tyson claimed two wickets apiece.

However David Makinson and Henry Thompson claimed four wickets each as Kendal were bowled out in reply for 121 off 48.5 overs.

Kendal gave home debuts to Jason Dawes, Kuldeep Singh, Zachary McCaskie, Edward Price, Saeed Bariwala and Ryan Shephard. Ben Phillips also played his first game of the 2017 season after moving from Netherfield midway through the 2016 campaign.

Leyland won the toss and elected to bat, however Kendal made the early breakthrough when Tyson trapped Karl Cross LBW for 15.

Kendal continued to take control as Dawes dismissed Pabasara Waduga while Tyson trapped Henry Thompson LBW leaving Leyland in trouble on 39-3.

The Auld Greys worked through the visitors' attack, as Ross Bretherton was caught behind by Shane Hyland after playing at a good delivery by Price before Chris Miller dismissed Andrew Makinson who picked out Tyson on 36.

Leyland at that stage had been reduced to 87-5, however Tom Reece and James Rounding guided the visitors onto 105.

Kendal battled back as Rounding was caught behind by Hyland after connecting to a good delivery by Bariwala before Tom Reece was clean bowled by Dawes for a top score of 41.

Bariwala claimed the final wicket of the innings when Jacob Wright picked out Miller before Sean Dunk and David Makinson guided Leyland to 150-8 off 50 overs.

Kendal made a strong start in their reply as McCaskie and Ryan Shephard put on a first wicket stand of 19.

Leyland broke the partnership when McCaskie was caught by Thompson off a good delivery by Ross Bretherton.

Phillips and Shephard formed a recovery as Kendal raced onto 44, but Leyland regained the momentum after Shephard played a poor shot into the hands of Will Jacques as Bretherton claimed his second wicket.

Kendal collapsed from 44-2 to 53-4 as David Makinson bowled Oliver Tyson and Bariwala. However the gloom descended over Shap Road when Thompson claimed the wickets of Dawes, Phillips, Price and Miller with Kendal in danger 93-8.

Hyland and Toby Tyson steadied the innings while Leyland dropped plenty of catches as Kendal battled back.

However any hopes of a result were soon thwarted as Makinson bowled Hyland before he trapped Tyson for LBW in the 48th over as Kendal were bowled out for 121.

Kendal travel to play Chorley on Saturday.
