Kendal Town battled for a 2-2 draw with play-off hopefuls Lancaster City in front of a bumper crowd at The Pye Motors Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday.

Kendal were 2-1 up but former Town player Zach Clark denied them the win as the pacy midfielder's seventy third minute strike rescued a point for Lancaster City.

Earlier goals by Alex Newby and a scintillating strike by Morecambe loanee Charlie Bailey had overturned an earlier 1-0 deficit for the Mint Cakes in an impressive display.

Kendal got off to a slow start, and for the first ten minutes struggled to get into the game. Lancaster went ahead after five minutes when a free kick by Ryan Winder was headed in by the unmarked Jacob Davies.

Kendal were unfortunate not to equalise a few minutes later as Danny Forbes' effort was ruled out after the ball was adjudged to have not gone over the line following a goal line scramble.

In a lively first half, Lancaster had further opportunities to add to the score sheet as Neil Marshall's effort was saved, before Zach Clark was denied on goal after some good rearguard defending by the Kendal Town back line.

Kendal caused Lancaster a lot of problems with the visitors' midfield struggling to get to grips with Kendal Town's attacks.

Lancaster could have added a second midway through the half as Jacob Gregory squared the ball across the box only for Ryan Winder to fire wide of the post.

The Mintcakes equalised on 35 minutes as Alex Newby volleyed the ball low under Lancaster keeper Will Hale, after Newby got on to the end of a chip to the far post by Danny Forbes.

Kendal started the second half well, but Lancaster's Jacob Gregory missed a great opportunity after firing wide of the post.

The Mintcakes though pressed and were rewarded on 49 minutes as Charlie Bailey unleashed a spectacular 25-yard right-footed effort, which bent beautifully into the top corner of the net.

Kendal, with their tails up, almost made it 3-1 when Charlie Bailey forced Will Hale into pushing the ball round the post for a corner.

However, Lancaster made a triple substitution, with former Kendal Town player Tom Kilifin one of those to come off the bench.

The changes seemed to have the desired effect as Lancaster began probing the Kendal backline.

Ricky Mercer saw his header go over the bar, but the Lancaster pressure told on 79 minutes as Zach Clark volleyed home the equaliser from close range after getting on the end of a free kick, which Kendal keeper Chris Thompson was unable to gather.

Once Lancaster had equalised, they pushed for the winner, with Craig Carney shooting wide from 20 yards. However Kendal had a big chance to retake the lead in the last ten minutes but Liam Breslin could not connect to a ball across the box by Danny Forbes.

The game fizzled out in the closing stages as both sides had to settle for the point. Kendal, though, will be happier with the result as well as the performance as they impressed in front of a bumper crowd of 390.

Kendal host Droylsden on Saturday before entertaining Scarborough Athletic on Tuesday night.
