APPLEBY have been crowned Westmorland League Division One champions after beating Kendal United 1-0 on Thursday night thanks to John Coward late strike.

The match appeared to be heading for a 0-0 stalemate until Coward struck three minutes from time.

Appleby made amends for missing a penalty midway through the second half as well seeing a goal ruled out for offside.

The victory, which sealed Appleby's first league title in 35 years, came as a relief as they lost 3-1 to Keswick on Saturday in what could have been a final day show down.

Declan Robinson, Tom Atkinson and Andrew Frampton with the goals for the eventual runners-up.

Keswick put a lot of pressure on the league leaders as they also won 4-0 at Kendal County Reserves on Thursday night. However, Keswickcan take comfort in the fact that they have clinched the cup double and have a High Sheriffs Cup final with Kirkoswald to look forward to on Thursday as they aim to complete the treble.

Kendal United finished fifth after an entertaining 5-3 home win over Kirkoswald, Andy Lockhart scoring four goals with Danny Craig also on the score sheet.

The Wetheriggs United and Carvetti United game was postponed as Carvetti couldn’t raise a team for the fixture.

In Division Two, Ibis were promoted to Division One following a 4-0 home win over Shap thanks to goals from Jez Walsh (2, Calum Taylor and Luke Deveney.

Unisun Athletic are also promoted after winning the Division Two title on Thursday night following a 3-1 win at Endmoor before edging to a 3-2 win at Staveley United on Saturday.

In Division Three, both Kendal United Reserves and Dent are promoted to Division Two. Kendal sealed their promotion thanks to a 2-1 win at Eden Thistle last Wednesday. Mark Barnes Davies and Connor Stephenson on target

In Division Four, Pirelli are up as champions with Carleton Banks also promoted.

Carleton Banks went up after a 3-1 win over Border City. Jake Briggs opening the scoring, before a Rob Anderson's brace sealed victory.

Burneside won the Mason and Freeman Cup defeating Unisun Athletic 2-1 at Parkside Road on Bank Holiday Monday.
