A COMPELLING Westmorland and Furness Trophy final saw Kendal Hornets secure victory with a try scored by replacement hooker Jason Donaghue 12 minutes from time.

Final score was Upper Eden Boars 6 - Kendal Hornets 10.

Kendal had taken the lead in the closely contested game in the 29th minute when back-row Andrew Holcroft charged forward into the heart of the Boars' defence.

Quick ruck ball was won and the ball passed to Tony Bingham, cutting inside off his left wing, and he passed out of the tackle to Evan Onyango who crossed for the try.

Bingham's conversion attempt rebounded back off the left upright.

What looked like a serious injury to Hornets player John Staples was thankfully later confirmed as damaged muscles in his neck and he was able to join his team mates in celebration later in the evening.

The Boars came back at the Hornets and successful penalties from Mike Hughes either side of half time gave them a 6-5 lead.

However, with the Hornets regaining momentum late in the game, full back Dale Lowrey took a quick tap penalty and raced for the tryline, Stephen Wooff was, as usual, up in quick support and from a driving maul Donaghue burst for the line to crash over for the crucial score.
