At one time virtually every house in Bolton had one – the outside toilet.
Whatever the weather family members would make the journey to the loo so you can imagine how the advent of the indoor bathroom was so welcomed.
This great photo shows houses in Darcy Lever due for demolition with one of the outdoor toilets still standing. Surprisingly this photo was taken as recently as 1982.
