A LAKE District hotel has been named the tenth most romantic in Europe in the 2017 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for hotels.

The Grasmere Hotel was also named the third most romantic hotel in the UK. It also finished 13th in the best service category and seventh in the bargain category.

Proprietor Rob van der Palen believes the romantic atmosphere comes with the hospitality the small Victorian hotel provides.

“I am proud to say that we have been the best hotel in the Lake District on TripAdvisor for four years running," he said. "I would like to thank all of our staff and guests.”

The Grasmere Hotel is already fully booked for Valentine’s Day.

Mr van der Palen said that on Valentine’s Day there will be small touches in the menu to mark the occasion although he did not know what they were to be this year.

Other successful hospitality businesses in the area included the Thornleigh Guest House in Keswick, which was named the eighth best B&B in the world, sixth in Europe and fourth in the UK.

Also in the best B&B category, the Riverside, Ambleside, and HillCrest22, Keswick, placed 11th and 22nd in the UK respectively.

Windermere hotels featured highly in the awards with the The Applegarth Villa and Restaurant named seventh most romantic in the UK and 23rd in the luxury category.

The Cedar Manor Hotel and Restaurant was ninth romantic and 19th for best service while the Gilpin Hotel & Lake House ranked 20th as most romantic and 25th best for luxury.

The Cragwood Country House Hotel came 25th in the UK for Best Service, and Linthwaite House in Bowness-on-Windermere took 24th place in the UK’s top hotels list.
