LOCAL chefs Duncan Collinge and Keith Taylor will be battling it out at Orton Farmers’ Market tomorrow (Saturday) to make a feast for a fiver.

They will be assisted by ‘yours truly’ and Radio Cumbria’s Gordon Swindlehurst as they work against the clock to produce a feast made only from ingredients bought at the market.

Duncan Collinge, from the Ullswater Hotel, and Keith Taylor, from the Greyhound at Shap, are both acknowledged supporters of local food and are delighted to take up the challenge.

“It should be great fun,” said Duncan. “Orton market has a tremendous reputation for the quality, range and freshness of the produce so I’m sure there’ll be no problem finding the ingredients we need to create a real feast.”

There are nearly 40 local producers and farmers selling regularly at the market, explained market organiser Jane Brook.

“Between them they provide just about everything people need for their weekly shop,” she said.

Orton’s very own version of Ready Steady Cook is the latest in a series of events aimed at making a trip to this particular farmers’ market an enjoyable family day out. However, there is also an educational purpose.

“Some people still think that shopping at farmers’ markets is only for foodie fanatics”, said Jane. “Duncan and Keith will be setting out to prove that producing a feast with fresh food needn’t be complicated, time-consuming, or expensive”.
