NEXT in the Heron Theatre chamber music programme are husband and wife duo John Mills and Cobie Smit. They play the Beetham theatre on Sunday afternoon (2.30pm) March 3, performing music by Bach, Schubert, Piazzolla, Albeniz and Granados.

Cobie took up the guitar early in her childhood and went on to study full time at the conservatories of Rotterdam and The Hague, later hailed as one of Holland's leading young players. Cobie and John married in 1984 and spent three years in New Zealand from 1985-88 teaching and performing both there and in Australia. Cobie performed the Rodrigo Concerto with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and has recorded for Philips. She now teaches at both Downside Abbey and Millfield School in Somerset and Salisbury Cathedral School in Wiltshire.

John is a former student of John Williams, Julian Bream, and the legendary Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, he has been active on the concert scene for 56 years, including tours in North America, Brazil, Europe, Scandinavia, and SE Asia. He was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music for 20 years, and head of guitar at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, at Cardiff, for nearly three decades.
