SID Vicious would have been proud. South Lakes lads Cacophony may not be long out of short trousers but they are already making their own music and it has got Punk spray painted all over it.

The group is made up of 13-year-olds Nathan Jackson, on bass; Jamie Birkett, on guitar; and Luke Munro, vocals.

And, following a plea in Off The Record for a drummer, the group is now complete thanks to 15-year-old Matt McClury – a Kirkby Lonsdale Queen Elizabeth School pupil who saw the ad and got in touch with the band.

All big Green Day and Rancid fans, Punk Rock devotees Cacophony have already had a string of small successes worthy of a much older, experienced band.

As well as performing for fellow pupils at Kirkbie Kendal School, the group won a special commendation at a Battle of The Bands competition at Newton Rigg college campus and have already impressed audiences at two jam nights at Dickie Doodles in Kendal.

On the back of one of their Dickie Doodles performances, the boys have been invited to play an early slot at a bands’ showcase night at the Ibis social club on November 7.

Featuring the likes of Dog Toffee, The Hyperjacks, AK Riot, Pike and Spinbox, the night will bring together a number of local and touring groups.

“Most of our friends are really into Heavy Metal and Goth but we mostly listen to punk bands. We write that kind of music too,” said Jamie.

And here’s the interesting part.

While many adolescents spend their evenings in their bedrooms dreaming of fame, fortune and a record deal, Cacophony spend their evenings in their bedrooms actually writing and rehearsing material. Their next ambition is to record a demo CD and their dream is to get a record deal.

School friends Luke and Jamie share most of the writing responsibilities.

“We just sit down, someone comes up with the idea, then we work on writing the song, the melody and then the vocals. We just sort of picked it up for ourselves,” said Jamie.

They might still need to be ferried to gigs by mum and dad but Cacophony, with the help of a nice collection of band-chic T-shirts and a couple of serious rock hairstyles, are already going places. Who knows where they might end up.
