KENDAL College foundation degree students will be showing their artistic talents in the run up to Christmas with a special exhibition at the college’s arts and media campus on Wildman Street.

The exhibition showcases a selection of the students work and demonstrates a range of creative approaches to drawing.

“A lot of the work in the exhibition has been inspired by the students own personal practice,” explained course tutor Sorrel Stratford.

“Some are investigating thought provoking themes like domestic violence and postnatal depression.

“Whereas others are looking at seascapes and childhood memories.

“The students are exploring drawing through a variety of different disciplines and approaches, from printmaking to sculpture and computer-based.”

Sorrel said that the degree was now in its second year and was developing into a really exciting programme.

She added: “The students are proving to be a vibrant collective of highly motivated individuals, sharing and developing really good ideas.”

As well as Sorrel, the college has a highly experienced range of lecturers from practicing artists and designers and an exciting programme of guest lecturers, visits, external exhibitions and public commissions.

The team includes Gareth Longstaff, who is based at Newcastle University; accomplished local artist, Mike Nelson; one of Cumbria’s best figurative painters, Catherine Macdiarmid, and highly-regarded international glass designer, from Kendal, Jo Vincent.

All the students have purpose built individual studio spaces and a shop fronted gallery area where the current exhibition is being held. The studios and gallery will be open to the public on Thursday, December 17, from 1pm-4pm for those who want to go along and chat to tutors about the course. There will also be a range of free taster days in January.
