A CUMBRIAN MP is pressing for safety improvements to be delivered on the A590.

This week in Parliament Tim Farron, the MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, met with Bruce Parker, the head of planning and development North West at National Highways.

During the meeting Mr Farron pushed for progress on plans to introduce speed cameras and lower speed limits on those sections of the road that has been plagued with accidents throughout recent years.

As well as this, Mr Farron also pressed for the carriageway to be widened to enable safe turning at the Newby Bridge garage.

A foot and cycle bridge at the junction by Haverthwaite Railway Station and a roundabout at the junction by Gilpin Bridge near Levens was also pushed for.

According to the Department for Transport from 2015 to 2019, there were eight fatalities, 14 serious accidents and 58 slight accidents on the A590.

The MP described the A590 as a ‘crucial link’ between towns and the M6.

Mr Farron said: “The A590 is an absolutely crucial link between Barrow, Kendal and the M6.

“Tragically though it has become an accident blackspot, with numerous incidents of people sadly losing their lives.

“I want to pay enormous tribute to the tireless campaigning from local residents, local parish councils, and local councillor Sue Sanderson who have been banging the drum to make this road safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”

Mr Farron stated the importance of safety works being undertaken swiftly to avoid any more fatal collisions happening on the road.

He said: “It’s vital there is no delay, and that the proposed work is done urgently to prevent more lives tragically being lost.”
