ONE of the largest CCTV systems in the UK could be rolled out across Cumbria.
A report from the county’s chief constable Bernard Lawson to the Police and Crime Commissioner Richard Rhodes provided an update on the proposals, which could see the system go live next year.
It is believed that the 54 cameras, which would be run from a central control room at the Penrith police headquarters, would release officers to tackle other crime and disorder.
In the report Mr Lawson said: “CCTV deters criminals. It provides invaluable evidence to support investigations – particularly serious violent crimes – and helps bring offenders to justice.”
