It charts the personal and professional transformation of the protagonist, Pier, as he moves from being a diffident young man from a privileged background to becoming a social worker.
During his time as a social worker, he encounters many difficulties from organisational cutbacks to financial restraints.
In the course of his career he stumbles upon a major sexual abuse scandal perpetrated by a senior figure in his own organisation who will go to extreme lengths to avoid detection.
Although dealing in controversial issues, the book can be light-hearted and humorous. But the author does not shy away from tackling topical subjects in his writing.
