A SECTION of the A590 is to benefit from 'thousands of pounds' of funding to make it safer for motorists, says Tim Farron MP.

Work will be concentrated on the turn-off which takes west-bound motorists on the A590 across both lanes of the eastbound carriageway in order to reach Witherslack.

The area is said to have been the scene of many collisions and near misses by those unaware they can access the village via the underpass or the long way round via Meathop roundabout.

It is to benefit from cash from the Department of Transport, said Mr Farron.

It follows campaigning by Witherslack Parish Council and Mr Farron who led transport minister on a tour of A590 problems including the right hand turn-off during a visit to the area.

Public meetings have also been held because of concern over the crossing.

Mr Farron described the newly-announced commitment as a 'big win'.

"Witherslack junction is dangerous and for visitors and local and pressure from all of us locally is now going to make it much safer for everyone," said Mr Farron.

It is understood the money is coming from a remaining pot allocated to the Greenodd roundabout project.
