BUSINESSES have backed a campaign which is saying no to the construction of a proposed zip wire in the Lake District - branding it a 'fairground ride'.
Residents have already threatened to move from the idyllic village of Glenridding should Windermere-based Treetop Trek's proposals for four parallel mile long zip wires go ahead.
But now hotels, shops and charities have signed an online petition in support of the #noziphere campaign.
Objectors include the Inn on the Lake Hotel, The Glenridding Hotel, Glenridding House, Fairlight Guest House and Helvellyn Cottages.
The Inn on the Lake Hotel general manager Gary Wilson said: "I strongly believe that the product that is Ullswater needs to be protected.
"People visit the valley for the unspoilt scenery and the idea of peace and tranquility away from the fast pace of life in the city."
And Patterdale Village Store, Sharmans of Glenridding, Glenridding Mini Market and Ullswater Filling Station have also opposed the plans.
Ullswater Filling Station owner Neil Atkinson said: "I might be one of the few businesses who would gain from more daily visitors but I firmly believe this is the wrong place for this sort of development."
A public meeting will be held in Glenridding Village Hall on December 3 at 7pm and it will be attended by Treetop Trek director Mike Turner and Lake District National Park chief executive Richard Leafe.
