ULVERSTON Town Council (UTC) have until June 30 to find new premises before work begins to convert the town hall into flats.
South Lakeland District Council (UTC) agreed the timescale at its Cabinet meeting last week, as well as a contingency plan to ‘dispose of’ the Coronation Hall if the town council do not comply.
Detailed negotiations have taken place for the relocation of UTC to the Coronation Hall, but town council clerk Jayne Kendall said ‘no conclusions had been reached’.
“We are working very closely with SLDC to come up with the right space for the office,” she said, “we know the Coronation Hall is most people’s preferred option but it depends on cost
“The town council needs to decide what the best thing would be, however we have agreed in principle to co-operate with SLDC – we understand where they’re coming from.”
SLDC’s Cabinet also voted to help other existing tenants in the town hall find alternative accommodation.
A council report said: “This may be through the provision of grant aid to cover relocation and set up costs and/or support in achieving suitable leaseholds.”
SLDC has previously the move of the town council into the Coro 'would help towards creating a single venue as a focus for civic and community use in Ulverston'.
