VANDALS left a trail of destruction near a Kendal school to add to the catalogue of offences committed at the site in recent months.

Benches were left strewn in the middle of Oxenholme Road, while daffodils were trampled outside Heron Hill School.

The Primary school has been the target of 'mindless' acts of vandalism, such as smashed glass strewn across the playground and the total destruction of playing equipment in the nursery grounds.

Police have been forced to step-up night time patrols in a bid to combat the criminality and local councillor, Phil Walker, says the anti-social behaviour needs to stop.

Cllr Walker said: "It's silly, mindless acts of vandalism. Just stop it - there's no need for it, especially as we've got Cumbria in Bloom taking place.

"It's sad to see these people destroy the lovely community spirit that the town has. It's not fair to the people who are cleaning it up and it costs money as well.

"It's a lovely area and it's being vandalised and victimised."

PC Everett of Cumbria Police has confirmed that police will continue with the increased patrols during the lighter evenings.

Anybody with information is urged to contact Cumbria Constabulary on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
