AS CARNFORTH station celebrates the making of classic movie Brief Encounter, 70 years ago, a sculptor has approached the town about creating a statue of David Lean, the film's director.

Carnforth town councillors were to discuss the idea at their finance and tourism committee meetings this week.

Town clerk Philip Charnley told the Gazette that the proposal was to locate a statue of Oscar-winning Lean in the town centre. "As I understand it, the artist’s idea is to have a life-sized David Lean sat on a director’s chair. There will be an empty director’s chair beside him where people can sit and have photographs taken, a bit like people being Ernie Wise by Eric Morecambe in Morecambe."

Mr Charnley added: "This is incredibly early stages and so there has been no discussion so far."

The life and works of David Lean are being recalled at an exhibition at Carnforth station, where some of Brief Encounter's most famous scenes were shot on the platform during wartime 1945.

One of the 20th century's great film makers, Lean also directed classics such as Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Great Expectations and A Passage to India. The display at the Bateman Gallery runs until the end of the year.
