ONE person was killed and four others injured following a four-vehicle accident on the A66 at Turks Head, Brough, near Kirkby Stephen, yesterday (Monday).
Cumbria Police said the incident happened at around 13.30pm when an Audi, travelling eastbound, crossed into the opposing lane and after glancing a lorry collided head on with a Nissan.
A Landrover Discovery travelling behind the Audi was then in collision with the crashed vehicles.
Following the accident, the Audi caught fire and the occupants were dragged clear by motorists who had stopped at the scene.
The female passenger of the Audi, who was said to be in her 70's and from Leicestershire, died at the scene from the injuries sustained and the 68-year-old male driver was airlifted to the Cumberland Infirmary with spinal injuries.
The three female occupants of the Nissan, who were believed to reside outside of Cumbria, were also taken to the Cumberland Infirmary suffering from minor injuries.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident and anyone with information should contact 0845-3300-247.
