A KENDAL man has been jailed after admitting stealing two bottles of Jack Daniels from Asda and then failing to attend court twice for sentencing.
South Cumbria Magistrates' Court heard that Jonathon Calvert, 29, of Stricklandgate, entered the supermarket on July 4 with a store basket containing a number of items.
Pam Ward, prosecuting, said Calvert picked up two bottles of Jack Daniels – worth £35 each – and then left the basket and walked out of the store with the bottles.
The court was told Calvert was seen a short time later by two police officers, and threw the bottles into the river when he saw them.
He told the officers he had ‘nothing on him’ but when they looked down into the river they could see the bottles of alcohol.
He pleaded guilty to theft but then failed to appear at court at the appointed time on July 22 and August 19 to be sentenced.
Sentencing him to eight weeks in prison for the three offences, chair of the bench Pam Keegan said: “You have expressed a desire to complete a drugs rehabilitation course, but from your record you have a pretty poor of compliance.
“We feel we have no alternative but to send you into custody.”
Calvert was also ordered to pay £70 compensation and £230 in costs and surcharges.
