IS it September already or did summer really just pass us by?

The answer of course is yes - to both. After two months of mostly cloud and rain, we couldn't be more prepared for the start of the cooler season - or rather the continuation of what we have already endured.

Okay, autumn - astronomically speaking that is - doesn't actually start till September 23 but as the nights draw in we might as well call it quits.

Coats are already starting to creep their way onto high street hangers and beachwear is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

According to Vogue, all that 70s-inspired gear (including those flares) is off the cards while shaggy coats and character earrings are keepers.

The fashion mag bible has also announced the return of the baby doll dress and the waist (yes, your waist).

So that's a thumbs up to belts, bands and bows to keep your hourglass figure on show.

But there is plenty of time to get stuck into filling up that autumn/winter wardrobe, and in the meantime we need a few staples to see us through that transition.

It's never easy deciding what to wear, so make it easy with some items that can suit the warm(ish) and cold.

Oasis has the perfect September wardrobe addition with a camel coloured jumper at £26.

Subtle and sophisticated, this preppy high round neck piece can be matched with skinny jeans and plimsolls on a nice day or layer up with a white shirt underneath plus tights, skirt, boots and a statement scarf if it's cool.

For something warm that doesn't announce to the world 'summer has gone', go with Topshop's MOTO fitted western shirt at £29.

The denim number is great for that slouchy but sexy boyfriend look.

Team with dark denim skinnies if you dare to double up or opt for a short, high-ish wasted skirt with tights and brogues.
