Workington 1 LANCASTER CITY 1

LANCASTER City celebrated the end of their turbulent season with a high point as they finished in the positive after a creditable draw at high-flying Workington.

The Dolly Blues managed a 1-1 draw on the Cumbrian coast to claw their way off zero points to put smiles on faces.

Barrie Stimpson's young side haven't stood a chance this season, especially after former chairman Charlie Moore pushed the club to the brink.

With players leaving in droves after not getting paid and manager Gary Finley walking out, Stimpson was appointed by new chairman Mick Hoyle after shareholders ousted Moore.

Players from the North Lancashire League were drafted in and the club was hit by a 10-point deduction for entering administration.

For all that it is a remarkable achievement for City to get back in the plus points - and now the big job of building for next season is underway.

City were behind at Borough Park inside 10 minutes as Craig Johnstone slammed home a penalty after a foul by Danny Barnes on Joe Kendrick. Then keeper Ross Liddicott saved well from the striker on two more occasions.

Lee Sparks and Leon Gierke both had half chances to equalise themselves before City were awarded a penalty when Ryan Elderton was impeded as he surged into the penalty area.

Up stepped Aaron Helliwell - and he made no mistake to send the travelling City fans wild.

Workington were stronger in the second period and Elderton cleared off the line to preserve Lancaster's point.

And the players celebrated in style on the final whistle in front of their supporters - and they had plenty to celebrate.

The club is alive and kicking.
