RUGBY: Upper Eden Boars picked up some silverware on Saturday when they lifted the John Marsden Trophy with a 43-10 win over Carnforth.
Playing into the wind in the first half, the Boars ran in five tries, with Dale Fisher crossing the line twice and Ben Alderson, Mike Hughes and Simon Alderson also scoring.
Ben Alderson kicked three conversions, while Carnforth replied with a solitary unconverted try.
After the break, the Boars lost their cutting edge despite having the advantage of the wind at their backs. John Longden landed two tries, with one converted by Dan Murray, and the visitors scored an unconverted try. The annual curtain closer to the season was sponsored by Paul Thompson.
l On Sunday, Upper Eden Old Boars beat Preston Grasshoppers Strollers 20-7. Try scorers for the Old Boars were Paul Richardson (2), Dave Murray and captain Neil Marsdon. In an open game, there were good performances by Old Boars' Dan Murray, Dave Murray, Paul Hindson, father and son front row forwards Tommy and Jonathon Bennett and Ivor Allonby.
