VOLUNTEERS are being sought to rid the Cumbrian shoreline of its tide of grime as part of the ‘Great British Beach Clean’ (September 18-21).
Only a handful of people have so far agreed to turn out, which the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) says could mean the county’s beaches are being taken for granted and may result in tourists turning their backs on some of the most beautiful coastline in the UK.
Charlotte Coombes, MCS Beachwatch Officer, says the lack of sign–ups in Cumbria was a real shame with clean up events organised at Drigg, Flimby, Harrington North, Maryport North Quay, Maryport South Beach and Oldside. There were 60 volunteers last year.
