CHARITY champions in South Lakeland and north Lancashire brewed tea and baked cakes to raise cash for charity as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Businesses, organisations and schools made sure the area became the 'cake district' by putting special events on Friday in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Majik House in Kirkby Lonsdale raised more than £200 by serving up ‘Cumbria’s Biggest Chocolate Cake’.

Events manager Sally Proctor spent nine hours making the 30 inches wide and five inches deep cake, and said she was ‘thrilled’ to see a good turnout for the event.

Staff at Slate Bar and Cafe in Wainwright's Yard, Kendal, did their bit by donating their tips to Macmillan, as well as baking cake that was served free to customers in return for a donation. The cafe also held a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and raised 'an amazing' £1,134.

Sanlam Private Wealth’s Kirkby Lonsdale branch, invited the public into their Main Street office for a cuppa and cake and together with a contribution from the company raised £450.

Organisers of the coffee morning event at Kendal Leisure Centre called for people inspired by the Great British Bake Off to bring their home-baked treats to their event.

Among the hotels taking part were Kendal’s Riverside Hotel, who enjoyed 'coffee, cake and a giggle' on at The Tannery Bar and Bistro, and Hillthwaite Hotel, Windermere, hosted its fundraising morning complete with a raffle, homemade cakes and tray bakes.

An impressive £750 was also raised by the team at Ingleton Community Centre with their coffee morning event and raffle.

And Year 6 pupils at St Mark's Primary School, Natland, baked and served cakes to parents, family and friends and raised approximately £320.
