A COUPLE who emigrated to Australia 11 years after tying the knot at St Oswald's Parish Church, Burneside, have celebrated a marital milestone.
Roger, 81, and Merle Reed, 79, marked their diamond wedding anniversary in the 'traditional style' with family and friends in Craigmore, South Australia.
They met when they "bumped into each other by accident" at Kendal Town Hall on January 12 1955.
Mr Reed, a retired accounts supervisor, said the recipe for a long and happy marriage was "a good choice of partner, good health and good luck." Mrs Reed, a retired ward assistant, said: "Being supportive in tough times and always remaining positive."
They have two children - Ian, 57, and Adele, 55 - six grandchildren - James, 28, Heidi, 25, Scott, 28, Melanie, 26, Vanessa, 21, and Shaun, 12, along with one new born great grandchild, Zak.
Mr Reed enjoys music, reading and gardening and his wife's hobbies include knitting and crocheting.
