MEMORIES are made of days like Sunday - anyone who walked up Wembley Way for Morecambe's momentous match with Exeter City will never forget the drama and the atmosphere of an occasion that will live with them forever.

It was one of those days that come along only two or three times in every lifetime... a day that everyone who made the long trek south will remember.

And we will all be proud to boast: 'I was there.' The stadium is awesome... the old Wembley was the most iconic stadium in the world and it was good. It was known as the venue of legends - the new one is better by miles. And it already has new legends, legends who wore blue shirts on a day when Morecambe FC hit heights many thought they would never reach.

And Sammy McIlroy's jig and tumble on the pitch will become as famous in years to come as the Nobby Stiles dance in 1966.

Morecambe's magnificent man-ager has tasted some serious highs in football but rates Sunday as one of the best - McIlroy is not over-egging the pudding. An honest and decent man, his reaction to Danny Carlton's wonder winning strike gave away his true feelings as his emotions took over.

And this, don't forget, from a man who has won FA Cups and managed at the very highest level in the game.

The sea of colour and wall of noise created by 10,000-plus travelling Shrimps will never be forgotten, nor will the sight of grown men sobbing - and not because they had found out the price of food and drink inside the stadium. These were tears of pure, unadulterated joy - from grown men, delighted women and joyous kids.

Thousands upon thousands of people walked around the stadium after the game shaking their heads and repeating the same mantra Morecambe are in the Football League'. It will take weeks to sink in.

The passion and joy Sunday's result brought shows just how much people care. The people in charge at Christie Park deserve the promotion; the fans deserve the promotion and most importantly, the players deserve the promotion.

It was a day to go down in history. People can remember where they were when JFK was shot, some can even recall their whereabouts when JR was shot...in years to come people will know exactly where they were and what they were doing when Danny Carlton scored the goal of his life and Morecambe surged into the Football League.

And no doubt many will remember the Monday morning hangover for just as long... but it's not often you can say The Shrimps are going up'.

Take a bow folks, you were all superstars... and now we've got the victory parade to look forward to on Friday evening as well.
