GED Brannan retired on the greatest stage of all after helping Morecambe into the Football League on Sunday.

The likeable Liverpudlian, 35, decided to call time on his glittering playing career after tasting the ultimate high of the new Wembley as the Shrimps lived the dream against Exeter City.

"I think that's probably it for me now," smiles Brannan. "I have had a wonderful career and managed to play at the old Wembley and the new Wembley and there are not many players who can say that.

"I am 36-years-old next January and you have to stop eventually and finishing on the pitch at Wembley is sweet.

"Sammy offered me another year but I think it's time. I am 36 in January and have had a wonderful career but you have to finish at some point.

"And to be a winner at Wembley isn't a bad note to finish on."

The former Tranmere Rovers, Wigan Athletic and Manchester City man - known throughout football as one of the nice guys - was a substitute on Sunday but was sent on to keep the nerves calm 10 minutes from time.

"It was great to get out there," he adds. "The 10 minutes was good but half-an-hour would have been better.

"I was on at Sammy from the kick-off to put me on and I enjoyed it. It was amazing."

Brannan is sure the Shrimps will prosper next season and says: "I have no worries. Survival will not be an issue, in fact it will be top half finish no problem.

"People at the club deserve this success. I feel privileged to have played with such a great bunch of lads and for such great officials and supporters."
